Summary of the House Committee Version of the Bill

SB 76 -- KANSAS CITY TRANSPORTATION SALES TAX

SPONSOR:  Wiggins (Rizzo)

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Urban
Affairs by a vote of 10 to 1.

The authority for all but 7.5% of the Kansas City transportation
sales tax will expire on December 31, 2001.  This bill extends
that authority to December 31, 2003.

FISCAL NOTE:  Estimated Net Increase to General Revenue Fund of
$138,370 in FY 2002, $278,760 in FY 2003, and $140,895 in FY
2004.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that this extension is passed every
2 years to extend the special half-cent sales tax which supports
public transportation in Kansas City.  The General Assembly
authorizes Kansas City's Mayor and City Council to impose the
tax.

Testifying for the bill were Senator Wiggins; Kansas City Area
Transit Authority; and Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
